About Cathy Mackey and the Scholarship
Catharine Canestraro Mackey was a person whose strength and compassion shaped every life she touched. Known for her steady kindness, her quiet resilience, and her deep commitment to others, she lived with a grace that never wavered—even when faced with the greatest challenge of her life. When cancer entered her world, Catharine met it with the same courage and dignity that had defined her from the beginning. Though she lost her battle in 1997, she was never defeated. Her spirit, her love, and her unwavering hope remain alive in the hearts of all who knew her.
A 1979 graduate of Urbana High School, Catharine’s legacy is rooted in her devotion to learning and her belief in the power of service. As a teacher, she poured her heart into helping young people discover their potential. She believed deeply in the value of education, in the importance of community, and in the responsibility each person carries to lift others up. Her classroom was more than a place of instruction—it was a place of encouragement, belonging, and possibility.
In honor of her life and the values she lived so fully, the Catharine Canestraro Mackey Scholarship was established. This award provides $1,500 for a student’s first year of college and is offered to graduates of Urbana High School who are pursuing careers in teaching or civil service—fields that reflect Catharine’s lifelong dedication to serving others. Through this scholarship, her influence continues to guide new generations of students who share her commitment to making a meaningful difference in the world.
Catharine’s story reminds us that a life of purpose does not end; it echoes forward. Her courage continues to inspire, her love continues to shape lives, and her legacy continues to open doors for those who follow in her footsteps.
